The Stonewall Project: Substance Use Programs

WHO: Gay, bi and trans men who want info about harm reduction and/or help with drugs or alcohol.

WHEN:  Services are offered at our two locations: 470 Castro Street and 1035 Market Street. Please see our self-directed/walk-in calendar and our enrolled participant calendar for details.

The Stonewall Project is a family of programs that provide harm reduction-based counseling, treatment, and support services to gay, bi, trans and other men who have sex with men having issues with drugs and/or alcohol. We welcome you wherever you’re at, and do not require abstinence for you to receive services.

We provide a full range of counseling services that integrate substance use, mental health and HIV prevention and education in a way that’s best for you. If you use crystal meth, crack cocaine, powder cocaine, alcohol or other drugs, you’ll find a safe space where you can come to deal with issues you’re concerned about without stipulations. We will work in partnership with you to help you create the goals that make sense for you. Come as you are regardless of whether or not you’re clear what you want to accomplish!

The aim of the Stonewall Project is to reduce the harm caused to you, your loved ones and your communities by your drug and/or alcohol use. As a program rooted in harm reduction, your goals may vary across the harm reduction spectrum and can range from complete abstinence to controlled or safer use based on a desire to improve your health, your relationships or your functioning in the world.

Walk-in Program

No paperwork, no intake, no waits…

Check out our walk-in groups, book clubs, drop-in acupuncture, social spaces, and harm reduction info sessions. Learn more about our Walk-In Program.

Enrolled Program

Want structure, personalized counseling, and a ‘treatment plan’?

Our intake coordinator and orientation groups will welcome you to the enrolled program. Each week you’ll meet with your own counselor and participate in two groups of your choice. Manage your substance use, cut down or work towards abstinence – at your own pace! Or be abstinent from one or more drug(s) and/or alcohol. Learn more about our Enrolled Program.

Positive Reinforcement Opportunity Project (PROP)

You’ll pay me to what? Yep. You heard right. Peeing for dollars with PROP.

If you are ready to quit or reduce your use of crystal meth, cocaine or other stimulants, the PROP program provides structure, community, counseling, referrals and financial incentives. Once you enroll you’ll attend the PROP lounge three times a week for three months and are given monetary credits for non-reactive urine tests for stimulants.

Interested? Meet with PROP Coordinator Rick Andrews to enroll in this supportive incentive program. The program is open to gay, bi and trans men who have sex with men and trans women who choose to stop using stimulants. Call (415) 487-3115 to enroll.

*PROP is only available at our 1035 Market Street location.
